Sladen Feinstein Wins IES Award for MIT Great Dome

Project

Lighting designers Sladen Feinstein have been awarded the Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) Edwin F. Guth Memorial Award for Interior Lighting Design. The prize, given out at the recent 2014 IES Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, was awarded to the Boston-based design firm for their work on the MIT Barker Engineering Library Reading Room.

Sladen Feinstein used Lumenfacade fixtures on the project, running the luminaires end to end to graze up the length of the dome. They were then aimed to ensure that the depth of the shadows on each coffer matched perfectly.

“The Lumenfacades are fantastic. The fixture is beautifully even and uniform; there are no hotspots, and the light travels the entire height of the Dome. It was the perfect fixture for distribution and intensity," said Julie Rose, Senior Lighting Designer at Sladen Feinstein.

The new lighting design increased ambient light in the space once nicknamed the “Batcave.” The amount of students using the reading room has since doubled.

The Edwin F. Guth Memorial Award recognizes interior lighting projects that balance the “functional illumination of space with the artistic application of light to enhance the occupant’s experience."
