Lumenpulse Inc. has helped illuminate the “Endless Stair” installation at the London Design Festival. The innovative LED company has teamed up with UK-based lighting design firm SEAM Design to give the unique public art installation a distinct night-time identity.

Commissioned by the London Design festival, in partnership with the American Hardwood Export Council, “Endless Stair” was designed by London-based dRMM Architects and engineered by Arup. Inspired by the drawings of M.C. Escher, the installation combines fifteen interlocking staircases – and 187 steps – to create a series of reconfigurable walkways leading to a dramatic viewing platform.

To create a striking night-time appearance for the Stair, SEAM used Lumenpulse’s innovative Lumenbeam and Lumenfacade, which provided the right mix of durability and performance, while remaining small enough to conceal. The firm used a 2700K color temperature to enhance the warmth of the wood, while narrow 10° optics highlight important details and limit glare. Full DMX capability, meanwhile, enabled individual control of segments of fixtures. This allowed for sequencing and choreography of light that visually recomposes and reconfigures the sculpture at night, matching its Escheresque design spirit.

“LED technology with DMX control capability was always our first choice for the Endless Stair, and the durability and flexibility of the Lumenpulse luminaires proved to be the perfect solution for this reconfigurable, outdoor installation,” said Marci Song, SEAM Director. “We’re very happy with the way the design turned out, and we couldn’t be more delighted by the public’s reaction to the installation. It’s been a real pleasure,” she said.

Florian Schaubach, Sales Director UK and Europe at Lumenpulse, believes the project has shown once again that SEAM Design is at the forefront of lighting design.

“They’ve given the “Endless Stair” a truly unique night-time identity; one that is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing. Being part of the London Design Festival and working with SEAM Design on this exceptional project was a true honour for Lumenpulse,” he said, adding that in keeping with the sustainable approach of the installation, the LED fixtures will be used for educational lighting and architecture events at festival’s end.

Endless Stair” will be open to the public until October 10th
